Billy Garrett a Candidate for Doña Ana County Commission, District 1
February 17, 2010

Billy Garrett has announced his candidacy for the District 1 seat on the Doña Ana County Commission, the position that Commissioner Oscar Vasquez Butler will be leaving at the end of this year.

“My roots in southern New Mexico,” Garrett said, “along with real life experience with multi-million dollar budgets, infrastructure development, and strategic planning will help in making good decisions about our future. People deserve effective, responsive government at the county level.”

Garrett grew up in Las Cruces and graduated from Las Cruces High School. He attended New Mexico State and Arizona State Universities before beginning a career with the National Park Service as an architect and manager. His responsibilities ranged from preserving historic structures at Grand Canyon National Park and in Washington, D.C. to managing operations at Gateway National Recreation Area in New York City.

“My family has lived in southern New Mexico for three generations,” Garrett said, “so I value the uniqueness of our history and culture. Working in national parks around the country has deepened my appreciation for our area, while giving me the skills and perspective to address complex issues in effective ways.”

Among Garrett’s top priorities are effective delivery of county services, accountability, and public involvement in county decision-making. A commitment to comprehensive planning will help local communities, both urban and rural, faced with limited resources and rapid growth.

“Creative problem-solving is what’s needed,” Garrett said. “We need to make sure this is a good place to live for everyone, now and in the future. I want to provide the opportunity for communities to shape their identities and the direction of their development. Working together, we can make good things happen in Doña Ana County.”

Garrett is the son of Edgar and Nancy Garrett, long-time educators in Las Cruces. His wife, Cynthia Garrett, also worked for the National Park Service, where she was the senior manager for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. He is on the Board of Directors of Mesilla Valley Preservation and played a major role in organizing the Mesilla West Mesa Task Force, dedicated to community-based exploration of land-use issues.
